The OECD just published a landmark research report in collaboration with There’s An AI For That to decode what’s really happening in today’s AI markets. This isn’t theory; it’s a hard-data global scan, and the findings are both encouraging and a wake-up call.
Key Takeaways:
AI Supply Explosion: Over 1,000 AI foundation models from nearly 100 developers are now live. Growth is off the charts, and text models alone account for nearly 80% of the market, with image and audio models catching up fast.
Prices Plummet, Quality Rises: The cost to access top AI models has dropped by 80% in just two years. Model quality keeps climbing while competition pushes prices lower, especially for “good enough” and open-source models.
Open Source = Open Doors: The open-source movement (think Meta, Mistral) is driving competition, lowering barriers, and speeding up innovation. But only 25% of “open” models actually qualify as fully open source. Licensing and control are still big issues.
No One-Company Rule (Yet): Despite US and big-tech dominance, the market is not locked up. Chinese, European, and indie players are catching up, often within months. Most of today’s leaders were nowhere just 18 months ago.
Cloud Competition Holds, for Now: The top cloud providers (Amazon, Google, Microsoft) aren’t charging above-market prices for AI access. The study found no proof of price gouging or anti-competitive lock-in yet.
